Just ahead of its debut at Pebble Beach Concours this weekend, Mercedes-Benz took the wraps off its latest concept car created for the event in the form of the EQ Silver Arrow. Meant as an homage to the classic W 125 record-setter from 1937, the latest EQ concept remixes vintage design themes of Stuttgart's high-speed prototypes with modern electric powertrain tech underneath the retro skin. The original W 125 car from 1937 that the EQ Silver Arrow draws its inspiration from was itself inspired by the airplanes of the day, and offered similar morning commute speeds. Driver Rudolf Caracciola achieved an average of 268.9 mph on the A5 autobahn between Frankfurt and Darmstadt, a record that was not broken until November 2017. "Over 80 years ago, the historic Silver Arrows demonstrated that Mercedes-Benz was a pioneer when it came to speed, thanks, among other things, to their streamlined shape," said Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer at Daimler AG. "The EQ Silver Arrow show car draws on that legacy. Intended for acceleration and driving pleasure, it embodies progressive luxury and provides an insight into the future of our design. As a result, the show car drives the design idiom of our new EQ product and technology brand to the top." Long but slender, the 208-inch long single-seater concept car is made of carbon fiber and finished in in Alubeam Silver to appear similar to liquid metal. The wheels themselves are also aimed at saving weight, featuring 168 aluminum spokes per wheel and finished in a rose gold color, just as the production EQ cars. The concept wears Pirelli 225/25 R 24 tires up front and 305/25 R 26 tires out back, with the wheels featuring non-rotating hubs. Out back, two extendible rear spoilers can act as air brakes when deceleration is needed. And it will be needed .When it comes to the drivetrain the Silver Arrow concept is owered by a thin rechargeable battery with a capacity of about 80 kWh, which gives it an approximate range of 250 miles. The electric motor, meanwhile, has an output of 738 hp. On the inside the EQ Silver Arrow mixes classic and future design themes, incorporating materials such as saddle brown leather and coniferous wood pinstripes along with walnut elements and brushed aluminum, lending it a slightly steampunk appearance. Modern tech includes a large panoramic projection screen which displays a 3-D image of the surroundings as well as offers a virtual racing mode that can be superimposed onto the real road. This system can permit the driver to view the competitors ahead of the car, and even behind it as silhouettes.
