No one will mistake the 720S for anything other than the sensational supercar it is. That much is obvious even while the mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive machine is at a standstill, which is the perfect vantage point to admire its aerodynamic bodywork, dihedral doors, and haunting dead-eyed visage. Its spellbinding appearance is further enhanced on the convertible 720S Spider that aims to satisfy fans of open-air cockpits. However, the British company that built the iconic F1 and the legendary P1 is more concerned with squeezing every ounce of performance from its products than winning beauty contests. Relax. The 720S does both. Both the coupe and convertible version cradle a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 that produces 710 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque. Those totals are funneled through a paddle-shifted seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The 720S coupe we tested at our track rocketed from zero to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds and reached 100 mph in 5.3 ticks. We also had the opportunity to pilot a similar version at our annual Lightning Lap, where we called it "wonderfully fun and scary fast." We drove one on a twisting and ill-maintained road in California, where its advanced suspension was able to smooth out imperfections and the steering system was a talkative companion. The whole experience was further evidence that McLaren has unrivaled chassis tuning. The core of every 720S is its carbon-fiber tub that helps limit weight and ensure rigidity, all while protecting passengers. Contained within this lightweight structure is a two-seat cabin that caters to the driver. While its interior design is less flashy than rivals from Ferrari and Lamborghini, the aesthetic is pleasing, and outward visibility is excellent. Sure, it can be a pain to escape from the low-slung seating position, and the touchscreen infotainment system is below average, but that's standard supercar procedure. Instead, the cabin can be outfitted with a variety of premium materials and bespoke options.

It's been more than two years since the new 2019 BMW Z4 was first spied, and it's still a year out from showrooms.

For the first time since the watershed sixth-generation Sonata debuted to much acclaim—including a Car and Driver 10Best award—Hyundai's mid-size sedan is once again banking on style as its key asset. The first photos of the new 2020 Sonata are here, and it's a visual knockout inside and out, with a vastly different silhouette, fascinating design details, and what looks to be a far more sumptuous interior. Could it be the new aesthetic leader of the mid-size sedan segment? In profile, the most noticeable change is to the new Sonata's greenhouse, which tapers nicely at the C-pillar, sloping down to a short trunklid to give it an almost Audi A7–like shape. It is still a sedan with a conventional trunk however, and the rear end is distinctive with C-shaped taillights that have a wraparound light bar bisecting the trunklid. The curvy hexagonal grille and smoothly shaped headlights up front are meant to fall in line with the new design language established with the Le Fil Rouge concept car shown last year. The Sonata's new interior looks to be a big step up as well, with an interesting new steering-wheel design, an elegant-looking dashboard sweep, and cool patters in the brown leather upholstery pictured here. A large horizontal infotainment screen is nicely integrated into the dash, while a pushbutton-style shifter and a digital gauge cluster look to modernize things. Hyundai isn't sharing any powertrain details about the Sonata at this point, but we expect it to remain front-wheel drive with a naturally aspirated inline-four as its base engine. A turbocharged inline-four should still be optional. Size-wise, the new car is longer, lower, and wider than before, with a 1.2-inch reduction in height, a 1.4-inch wheelbase stretch, 1.7 inch more overall length, and 1 inch of additional width. Expect to hear more details about the 2020 Hyundai Sonata soon as it officially debuts at the New York auto show in April.

The Toyota Yaris line in the U.S. has been really weird, what with the hatchback coming from Toyota, and the sedan coming from Mazda a rebadged Mazda2. For 2020, the Toyota Yaris line is still weird, but at least its consistent as the hatchback is also a rebadged Mazda2. And as far as styling is concerned, that's all there is to say. The front bumper is the the same angry catfish face as the Yaris sedan, and everything rearward comes from the Mazda2 that's available overseas and in Puerto Rico. The interior is the same as the Mazda2, and very similar to the Mazda CX-3. The switch to the Mazda platform has added 0.3 cubic-feet to the cargo space over the old Toyota version. Under the hood is the familiar 1.5-liter inline-four making 106 horsepower. Disappointingly, the only transmission available will be a six-speed automatic, whereas the current sedan is available with a six-speed manual transmission. But having six speeds is a massive improvement over the outgoing Yaris's ancient four-speed automatic. Fuel economy hasn't been announced, but expect it to get close to the Toyota Yaris sedan's 32 mpg in the city and 40 on the highway. This will be another improvement over the old Yaris hatch's 30 mpg in the city and 35 on the highway. Unlike the sedan, the new Yaris hatch will only be offered in LE and XLE trims, leaving out the base-level L. Every version of the car gets alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, fog lights, keyless entry with push-button start, automatic emergency braking and an infotainment system with seven-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Moving up to XLE adds leatherette upholstery, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, automatic climate control and automatic LED headlights. Pricing and availability haven't been announced, but it will likely go on sale later this year with a starting price around $17,000 like the Yaris LE sedan.
